PDF Files
Capstone Printing only accepts files in PDF format.  PDF stands for Portable Document Format.  This is the publishing industry’s standard format for transferring files for reproduction. In theory, a PDF is non-editable which reduces the chance of error and gives you the best desired results on your printed materials.

Every PDF is checked through a thorough preflight to ensure artwork, images and color meet reproduction standards.  If any files raise concerns, Capstone Printing will notify you and offer solutions to achieve your desired outcome.  As a rule, before generating PDFs, all colors must be converted to CMYK: cyan, magenta, yellow and black (including Pantone, PMS and RGB colors).  Using a program such as Acrobat Distiller will give you the best results and more control when creating PDFs for printing.

Photographs and Artwork:
The majority of our printing is performed using a 133 line screen (unless otherwise stated).  Therefore, black and white and color photographs should be a minimum of 300 pixels per inch at one hundred percent in your layout or publishing program.  Line art or bitmapped images should consist of 600 pixels per inch at one hundred percent.

Fonts:
Designers are free to use any typeface or font available in their library of their design application.  For best results, postscript and open type faces are the most reliable.  Truetype fonts are generally safe as well.  Some applications give you the ability to “outline” fonts into artwork.  The important practice is to embed all of your fonts as you generate your PDF. Again, using Acrobat Distiller can help you achieve the best results.
